[blank spacecraft] were recently invited by Scottish fine artist and designer Ross Hamilton Frew to collaborate on an experimental type project for the ‘Ways of Learning’ exhibition based at BALTIC39 in Newcastle upon Tyne.
As part of the project we worked with Frew to develop a workshop that would allow people to explore type and letterform design in a way that used Frew’s ‘Swithering Principles’ manifesto. On the day each participant was given a letterform at random, once all letterforms were handed out it was then down to them design it any way they saw fit. We encouraged exploration into experimental methods such as the use of collage, tape or photocopying. The final outcome is a open source typeface that is available for anyone to download and use.
